In Italy, in Spain, in Portugal and throughout much of the world, people are talking about the recent economic crisis and how it’s changed their lives. The Crisis has been a constant topic of conversation around dinner tables, in the homes of new friends, and a living study in real world economics for the kids. So when we arrived in Athens, where so many headlines about The Crisis have been centered, it didn’t take long before the subject arose again and our education continued. Ride along in a taxi with us through the streets of Athens and hear firsthand about the situation there.
We’ve missed you guys. Great one. Really interesting to hear from real people instead of the news.
It seems that Dimitrious was an economics professor before becoming a guide. I heard that government salaries were severely cut. Good luck to him and his compatriots.
The economic disease which has disabled us, according to Dimitrious, would appear to be “credit” and its reckless use in an economy where prices go up and wages remain stagnant.
How else are we to buy our “bottles of water, coffee and Coca-Cola”? Did he actually say, “Coca-Cola” in the same sentence with “water” and “coffee”? OMG!

I’ve been reading about that crisis in the ny times for years now, and I don’t think I’ve ever heard it explained better. (Or more pleasantly.).
That’s just the monetary crisis pointed out: There was (and still is) too much debt. But the real economic crisis is: The Earth’s resources are being exhausted.
Greece is one of those places we have been worried to visit bdcause of all that’s been in the news recently. You (and Dimitrious) make it seem like a welcoming place. How do we get in touch with him if we were to go?
The easiest way is to email him directly: dimitrios@athenscustomtaxitours.com
We found him via TripAdvisor, looking for a driver in Athens, and his reviews were absolutely stellar.
A good lesson and one with which I agree! (The part about paying off your credit card every month and not living beyond your means; trying to teach that one to the boys while living on the west side of LA and it’s tough!) Looks as though you also got to take in some history…I’m so glad, because I think Greece is a fascinating country.
We miss you guys!
Thanks for the lovely day we spent together!
Yours sincerely….Dimitrios ….your Taxi Driver Guide in Athens!
