amazing!!! Franny, we miss you!
Nim’s Island/Scmimm’s Island. I want a feature length movie just on Franny.
Beautiful!!!!
Mark, what a wonderful video. Franny, at 12, seems so self-aware and confident as you asks her some typical teen questions about the awesome trip she is about to embark upon. Without looking at the camera and multi-tasking with her phone, she fields your questions like an ‘tween expert, seriously and thoughtfully, and even with an adult sense of ambiguity—when asked about the possibility of future family “drama”. As a viewer, I am drawn into her world of charming competence as she manages the interview and the flow of inquiry like a pro.
Then you ask her, “What’s the country you are most looking forward to visiting?” And she says, “Paris”. It is in this moment of error that she is suddenly and beautifully vulnerable and 12 years old And now, almost immediately, you point out to her that you asked “which country”. She quickly corrects herself and says, “France”. But in that moment of correction, we see that this character is much more than a self-assured, confident little girl answering off-screen questions. Now we know that she’s your daughter. And you’re her very loving Dad.
Meanwhile, I’m signed up and looking forward to following this Great Adventure on the sidelines by remote control.
The part about her cell phone, her best friend captured “the teenage girl” in a way that was is so real and true. Loved.
