When traveling for a whole year, we like to find apartments that give us the experience of actually living someplace — as opposed to being tourists in hotels. In Tokyo, a series of random google searches and obscure links led us to a small (normal by Japanese standards) two-bedroom apartment in a part of town called Nishi-Ogibuko — or West Ogikubo as “nishi” means west in Japanese. In Tokyo, whenever we told anyone where we were staying, they’d alway say the same thing: “How on earth did you end up in Nishi-Ogi? No one ever stays there.” It may well be one of the least touristy places in Tokyo or, as we like to say, “one of the most authentic.” None-the-less, we absolutely loved our ‘hood. Here is a little ode to our morning walk to buy a cup of joe in good ol’ Nishi-Ogi.
Pardon my superfluous obviousness, but you sure make good short films.
Cool video. Have you seen a sports drink yet called “Pokari Sweat”? Make sure when you go to a Udon restaurant that you slurp the noodles..it’s considered polite and I think it’s fun too! I mean, loud slurping noises!
Unless they changed it over the last 20 years to accommodate the taller younger generations, the straps for straphangers on the subways and buses are just the right size for Jen,Franny and Finn. Brilliant.
Hope you are enjoying the awesomeness that is Japan. Oh, and BTW, if you have a Shiatsu massage it may be nothing like what you are used to from the US… I thought I was being murdered, that’s how strong and painful it was.
Love to all the Flackett-Levins and enjoy your stay. It is great that you have your own neighborhood. Very adventurous. love, Aunty Wendy
Love it… cool neighborhood.
Flackett, you lookin’ good!

SWEEEEEEEETNESSS
I loved the large square tiles in the garage. I’m calling our contractor this afternoon!
I also enjoyed this simple video a whole lot! “Step-printing’ in my day, (now an app?) Jenn’s casual walk for coffee with the sweetest music and her charming mini-Richard Lester performance. Mark, if ever you want to take (another) break from writing, producing and directing, you would get immediate work as a music supervisor! Absolutely!
Sayonara for now!

That was nice.
How’s the coffee after all that?
Surprisingly delicious! Traditional latte with an inch and a half of light foam.
I enjoy your videos very much; keep them coming. And would you consider continue making them after you come back home? Because if you don’t, I’ll miss them.
That was so nice and cool!!!
Phew, I’m all caught up. This is such a good book, I can’t put it down.
Tokyo! A hyper-urban experience not to be missed. It makes NYC look like Sherman Oaks. Find an okonomiyaki grill (probably on the 40ieth floor of a skyscraper) and enjoy outrageous seafood-egg pancakes. Arrange a predawn tour of Tsukijii Fish Market culminating in eating a sushi breakfast at 7am! We also enjoyed getting out of town on the bullet train to the mountain area nearby (Hankone). We stayed in a Ryokan and visited a fabulous outdoor sculpture garden, Hakone Open Air Museum.
Cheers,
Jordan, Susannah and Wally
cool!
I love your neighborhood, and that you are wearing a WOODS HOLE INN T-SHIRT all over the world! That is SO COOL! I am officially entering you in the Woods Hole Inn t-shirt contest. Not the wet t-shirt contest, the regular one:) You can’t win sadly, as you are my friends. But maybe we can get you a special runner – up prize? You certainly deserve it for this excellent product placement. LOVE YOU! –Bethie
