When the road is your home, the restaurants of the world end up being your kitchen. Eating only in restaurants actually grows quite tiresome after a while. On our first night in Bilbao, we arrived late and the owner of the apartment we were renting pointed us to a neighborhood joint that he loves. At the next table sat an elderly couple from Geneva. We struck up a conversation. “How long have you been in Bilbao?” we asked. “Three days,” the wife replied. “Where else have you eaten?” we asked. “Only here,” she answered. Her explanation was succinct. “The food is quite delicious here, the people are friendly, so all three nights we said let’s go again.” At the time, this sounded odd. Four days later, we understood exactly what she meant.(The restaurant is named Artxanda. Click here for a link to it on TripAdvisor. You will notice there are only three reviews and the third one is ours.)
Lovely! Yes, eating in restaurants every night gets old. But, having “ours” is comforting. Plus, that food looked very good. Love your website!
We are off to India tomorrow for the next three weeks. That is about as long as we can travel. But I envy your year.
It was a pleasure watching you all at dinner and it makes a lot of sense to have some continuity when everything is changing so constantly during this special year of yours.
Our family has “our” pizza place in Rome and since we’ve been fortunate enough to have had multiple visits to that wonderful city over a lifetime ,we’ve popped in there almost as frequently as we go to Pepe’s in CT!
It’s funny how exciting trying new places is and also how great going to the same place can be sometimes.
Bon Appetit, Flacketts. All my love,Aunty W.
This one made me a bit teary. Missing you guys but you all look so content.
And since we usually spend time with all if you at the table, was especially lovely to spend these moments with you.

So lovely.
As if I didn’t already love you guys so much, I just fell a little harder! Missing you and can’t wait for all of us to go back there together.

It is so wonderful receiving your posts from all the many places you are visiting. This quiet video about the restaurant was lovely following on the heels of your spectacularly beautiful rendition of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. And of course I loved your birthday video to Gail. Thanks for all the “gifts” of these videos along the way.
Warm regards,
Batya
So glad you didn’t use the Cheers theme song. Phew.
When I was a starving student and in Rome for three weeks I went to the same trattoria every third day and the same pizza place every morning. They were both so kind to me after the third visit. The woman who ran the pizza place taught me a little Italian each morning.
Lovely. Food and love, so important!
A year of traveling from one place to another, and then on to another after that, makes for a lot of comings and goings. Your video expressed so well how comforting it is, in a year of motion, to stay put for a while….and especially in a place where the food is tasty and the people are as warm as a hug. Heck, it’s almost like being “home”….for a while.
And Mark, you’ve got the music thing down to, if not a science, a sport. And if it were a sport…you’re making moves like Michael! Loved the poem recitation as well!

Looks like a good place to eat. Do they deliver to Michigan?
Beautiful…and so sweet. I completely understand! Perfect music, great food shots and you are a most charming family! I loved this. xox
This has become our Sunday morning ritual. And this one oh Lordy! – Billy and I are both crying! With Jasper asking, “Mommy are you sad?” And my reply: “No, honey: sentimental,” without a clue how to explain what that means… Miss you guys so much!!!
I want to go there!
Wine is cheaper than water!
How sweet!
Off to read your review. Something tells me it will be one of the most most moving posts on all of Tripadvisor.
Wine cheaper than water? THATS MY KIND OF PLACE!!!
