We could have flown from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh. The flight is less than an hour, but by the time you get to the airport, check in, wait, fly, land, collect your luggage, go through immigrations, customs, it’s much more than an hour. And we’d already flown 27 times. Besides the flight would have cost our family $758, while the bus ride was just $76 total for the four of us. We hadn’t done any long bus trips yet, so there was some masochistic part of us that wanted to subject ourselves to the discomfort of sitting on a crowded bus for half a day — to know what that feels like. The very best part, of course, is that you actually get to see the countries — the chaos of Saigon transitioning to rice fields, walking across boarders instead of flying over them, and the lush, very wet, tropical terrain of rural Cambodia. Take two and a half minutes and join us on our six hour bus ride.Franny says “A window on a bus is the best philosophy class in the world.” And she’s right. It gives you time to just stare out at the world and contemplate everything about your life. But she emphasizes “You must have the seat next to the window.”
this video brought tears to my eyes-the music with the all the varieties of visions. What a rich 6 hours of travel. Franny, very thoughtful comment.
What a beautiful video! I agree with Gail about Franny’s comment…that is very profound, Franny. While I don’t want to overly-glamorize your trip/year of schooling without the school, this would have been so awesome for me as a child. Since our traveling consisted primarily of a 2 hour trip to the Jersey Shore (I loved it, but…) your family’s life is the opposite of how our family operated. If Great-Bubs had been in charge we probably would have traveled the world over, but Zayda simply detested traveling! I’m glad that his offspring and their offspring did not inherit that gene.
This is really a special video and the song is a perennial favorite of mine. Thanks.
Thank you, and thank you again, for sharing your intimate, personal view of life in the world. And your good attitudes! My family would have begun their fussiness back at the Galapagos!
I loved this!!! AND I wanted MORE!!! I think even the whole 6 hours would have been interesting… and the song was great but somehow I don’t think you are longing for home, yet! Thanks so much for sharing your adventure! Love, Nene
Love.
Dear Flackett-Levins,
You and your #1FANNY are now joined in a way I would have never imagined. I have taken this very same, exact bus trip from Saigon to Phenom Penh…and while everyone’s experience (even of the same thing!) is different, seeing the human landscape, the window views and the VERY SAME border crossing station into Cambodia, where we both waited on line in the same room…it was like having a recurring dream.
$76 vs. $758. As we say in Los Angeles—“It’s a no-brainer!!!”
What did you do in Phnom Penh? Did you tour the historic sites related to the national holocaust instigated by the Pol Pot regime?

Beautiful!! Another iPhone flick?
Yup. The iPhone is a handy stealth tool for capturing our journey on the fly. You can make a whole movie with very little. We’ll make an “iPhone flick” tag, so you can check out all films that were primarily shot on our phone.
Fancy Bus! Brought back wonderful memories for me of similar transportation in Spain, Italy and Mexico. 2nd class buses to/from tiny village in Provence where the bus drivers played different operas each trip and everyone joined in the chorus: crammed buses in Yucatan where locals brought on chickens and other livestock and shoeless women shared huge baskets of local plums with their fellow travelers.
What an education: hope you do more on your incredible journey. Love
Your videos are indeed amazing. Even though made with a phone (ok, I am being simplistic with that statement), it has a certain brilliance to it, along with the music.
And what a lovely family. A few of us from our work here in St.Louis, MO have been following your adventure for a while now.
And I am from India – and wish you had chosen Kerala there as part of your itinerary. I could have guaranteed you a great time!
Anil,
We are in Kerala as we read this! And we are, indeed, having a great time. Can’t wait to share our impressions of Kerala with you.
